It’s 2020 and the future of work remains just out of reach.

But so it should, it’s the future after all and all we can hope for is our teams to have the agility and skills to keep up with the change.

If you want to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to change, here’s a summary from one of the more insightful reads on Change in 2020.

Dave Coffaro, Principal at Strategic Advisory Consulting Group has more than 30 years of experience leading and developing people as a strategic organisational advisor. Here’s what we got out of his latest article:

1. People

“Change would be easy if it didn’t involve people” – it’s easy to get caught up in the continuous and accelerated improvements in digital technology. Yes, it’s driving the change but how is that change driving our people, culture and customer experience? And what can you do to help with that transition?

2. Vision

Having a vision is one thing, but sharing that vision with your entire organisation is far more complex than simply telling your people where you’re going. To get effective buy-in from your people you have to be sophisticated in your internal storytelling.

3. Engagement

Stakeholders need to feel emotionally engaged in the purpose and vision for change, they need to understand their role in that change pathway and need to have regular communication with access to support as likely roadblocks arise.

4. Actualisation

Agile consultancies are notorious for wiping the slate (two-week sprint) clean without preserving the evidence of progress. It’s incredibly important for your people to regularly reflect on the actualisation of successful outcomes achieved. If you’re adopting agile ways of working and archiving your most significant “Done’s”, don’t!

5. Affirmation

Coffaro truly acknowledges the human element of change management with a quote from the greatest, Mohammad Ali: “It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.” Find your champions who are willing and able to reinforce the future state vision and this will re-inspire those who may lose focus or motivation along the way.
